Free ½ hour of advice & consultation with a volunteer attorney on bankruptcy and debt issues. Clinic hours are Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 PM in downtown Seattle and Mondays from 7:00-9:00 PM in south Seattle’s Rainier Valley. Referrals may be made KCBA Volunteer Legal Services for representation for low-income KC residents. Appointments are scheduled Monday – Thursday from 9:00 – noon.

KCBA Make Change – Free Debt Education Class

This is a free two hour class that will help clients address their debt issues, figure out when they need an attorney, what they can do on their own, and provide information on finding help. Topics include assessing your debt situation, dealing with debt collectors, how to respond to a collection lawsuit, and whether or not bankruptcy is right for you.

KCB A Lawyer Referral’s Low Fee

The KCBA’s Lawyer Referral program offers low income clients representation in Chapter 7 bankruptcies for a flat fee of $400 plus the $306 filing fee (fee waiver may be available), and limited debt defense services for $75 per hour with an advanced fee deposit of $375 that covers the first 5 hours of attorney time.

Provides free representation for low-income KC residents with Chapter 7 Bankruptcy and some garnishment and general debt defense litigation in which the client has evidence contesting the debt. Clients must call for a screening.

The Legal Information and Referral line is staffed by volunteer attorneys, paralegals and law students who help callers define their legal problems, provided legal information and referral to institutions, organizations and attorneys who can help them. The website includes a “Community Debt” publication, which is a two-page memo that explains Washington law about marital or community debts.
